Types of Active Optical Cables:

What are Active Optical Cables?

Active Optical Cables (AOCs) are essentially transceiver products that are permanently embedded with fiber optic cables. They are used for applications with consistent, predictable link distancing. Active Optical Cables are used in multi-lane data communication and interconnect applications. AOC cables will accelerate storage, data, and high-performance computing.

Active Optical Cable Applications

AOC cables were developed as an alternative option to Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cables for increased distance. They are primarily used in datacenters and high-performance computing, where cables with speed and distance are necessary. Many businesses are relying on AOC cables as their uses outweigh copper cables.

Advantages of AOC Cables

Using AOC cables will boost performance in speed and distance compared to typical copper cables. With AOC cables, sizable amounts of data can be transferred rapidly across longer distances. As a result, the efficiency of computing data is increased.

The lighter, thinner cables avoid restriction in organization and storage. Unlike copper cables, AOC cables are not bulky and difficult to manage over longer distances. AOC cables can simplify a setup without power delivery issues or electromagnetic interference.

AOC vs DAC Cables

Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cables are twinax copper cables that connect ports within active equipment such as routers, switches, serves, or data storage in a data center. The most common DAC cables are ethernet connection cables that connect 10G ports to other 40G and 100G ports.

Passive/Active DAC cables differ from Active Optical Cables. DAC cables provide a direct connection between corresponding cable ends. Active Optical Cables also provide the same connection, but they overcome passive cable limitations. Active Optical Cables offer the best speed in optical products, and are used in a wider range of applications.

QSFP28 Active Optical Cables

QSFP cables are 4 channel, small form factor fibre optic transceivers. More specifically, a QSFP28 cable is a hot-pluggable transceiver that is designed for 100G data rates. These AOC connectors are reliable, cost effective, power efficient, and ideal for high density signal transmission. QSFP28 active optical cables are typically used in data centers and high performance computing applications that require cable lengths of up to 100 meters.

Mini-SAS HD AOC Connectors

Mini-SAS HD AOC connectors are standard with SAS 2.1 and SAS 3.0 technology, as well as the SFF-8636 interface. These cables are primarily used for external enterprise applications, and will address all board connector and cabling applications of up to 100 meters. Mini-SAS HD AOC connectors give system architects complete control and a flexible range in order to meet IO system needs.

IDC Solutions

IDC connectors are small electronic components that help connect wires to circuit boards. They are commonly used in computers and other electronic devices to ensure fast and reliable connections between different components. These connectors work by piercing the insulation of a flat cable, making contact with the conductors inside. This creates a secure and efficient electrical connection that allows data to be transferred quickly and accurately. Amphenol is a leading manufacturer of IDC connectors and offers various types of connectors that are durable, cost-effective, and easy to use.

Types of IDC Solutions:

IDC Connectors

IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) connectors are commonly used in electronics and telecommunications applications where a large number of wires need to be connected quickly and efficiently. These connectors work by using sharp teeth or blades to pierce the insulation of the flat cable, making contact with the conductors inside. This creates a secure and reliable electrical connection between the cable and the connector.

One of the most common uses of IDC connectors is in computers and data storage devices. They are commonly used in hard drives and other data storage devices to connect the internal cables to the PCB. These connectors allow for fast and reliable connections between the various components of the device, ensuring that data can be transferred quickly and efficiently. Other applications of IDC connectors include telecommunications and automotive.

Fiber Optic Transceivers

An optical transceiver is a module in a fiber-optic network that converts an electric signal into optical light. With the support of lasers, this optical data, or these light pulses, can travel a hundred miles through the cable at up to 100 GB/s.

There are different types, or form factors, of fiber optic transceivers available, and each type differs in terms of data type, the distance required within the site network, and speed. The higher the transmission rate of the optical transceiver, the more complex the structure.

Form Factors

The form factor of a transceiver indicates its size and function. The Multisource Agreement (MSA) serves as a standard for transceivers’ design and production, to ensure that all models of the same form factor have the same size and function. The application of local oscillators ensure no false signals are radiated.

SFP Transceivers

The Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) is a network interface transceiver ideal for several applications, particularly data communications and telecommunication.

On networking hardware, a SFP interface is a modular slot that is compatible with the transceiver, allowing for an optic fiber or copper cable connection. SFP28 is a 25Gb/s interface that uses one 28 Gb/s lane. This form factor supports single- and multi-mode fiber connections, direct attach copper, and active optic cable.

SFP+ Transceivers

SFP+ is a multi-rate transceiver that offers the best value in storage-area networks (SAN) and 8.5Gb/s to 11Gb/s data communication applications. This module is an improved version of the SFP transceiver, but it has the same size.

The SFP+ module is also compatible with SFF-8472, which allows for real-time parameter monitoring, including optic input and output power, temperature, and supply voltage. The SFP+ form factor is about 30% smaller than the XFP module, and it uses less energy.

QSFP+ Transceivers

The Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable Plus (QSFP+) module integrates well in high-performance data centers and computing networks with high-density 40G connectivity. This form factor features four independent reception and transmission channels that can terminate to another QSFP+ module. Alternatively, you can distribute communications to four 10Gb SFP+ modules.

According to the QSFP+ Multisource Agreement, the 40G QSFP connectors can be duplex LC or 12-fiber MPO. The former is suitable for the transmission of data over long distances using single-mode fiber. The latter is ideal for data transmission of short distances with a multi-mode fiber.

CFP Transceivers

The C Form-factor Pluggable (CFP) products use modern technology and are relatively large, to support 100Gb/s.

This model is popular in the United States because it supports a wide range of link lengths, data rates, and physical media-dependent interfaces. Additionally, the CFP form factor supports both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.

XFP Transceivers

The 10Gb Small Form-factor Pluggable (XFP) offers the best performance, price, and data rate for telecommunication and computer network settings. This form factor is relatively old, but businesses use it throughout the United States. XFP applications include 10Gb/s fiber channel, 10 Gigabit ethernet, and synchronous optical networking.
